It’s been quite unexpected but an amazing thing to have happened.” The first book was an amazing success so they asked me to do some more and I’ve just really been very, very lucky. “I then realised that 100,000 words for a book is very different to 700 or 800 words for a blog post, but I got there. Then I was asked if I would like to write a book along the same lines so obviously I said that would be brilliant, without really thinking it through. “But people did people shared it, people liked it, people enjoyed it – quite a lot of people started reading it and it grew from there. “I started a slightly rant-y Facebook blog about parenting called Peter and Jane and I thought no one would ever read it, apart from my friend who had told me I should start doing this. Gill reveals how she launched herself on the road to book-writing success (she previously worked for an engineering company): “I started back in 2016 as a sort of joke with a friend,” she recalls. Her accent, timing and emotional range are a perfect fit for the story. I strongly recommend the audiobook version of this novel because Allison McLemore’s narration makes good text even better. Well, not unless they’re original, funny, well written, and make you fall in love with the main character, not because she’s zombie but because she’s doing her best to be a good person who just happens to need to eat brains, in which case, I’m reading “My Life As A White Trash Zombie.” This book is pretty close to perfect (except for the cover art, which is cool but not remotely related to the character of Angel Crawford in the book) the story is fast-paced enough to keep you turning the pages (or listening in my case), the language is vivid, fun and unconventional and the “voice” of Angel Crawford is authentic and compelling. Times had changed, and it went on to win a big prize. I had written four other novels before my French Revolution story was published in 1992, as A Place of Greater Safety. My manuscript went out into a world where, to many publishers, ‘historical fiction’ only meant ‘historical romance’. I set out tell some of them in a huge novel that took five years to research and write. But most of the novels I came across were about the royals and nobles while I thought the revolutionaries had the best stories. I was fascinated by the era, and always keen to find convincing, immersive historical fiction.
